  • I applaud anyone who is pointing toward root causes rather than symptoms. Perhaps we should also look at the acts and motivations of some of the powers that be for root causes. It seems to me that the issue of perpetuating another endless war is one of the root causes. This is about US.

  • Frank Scheaffer, in his book "Crazy for God" gives a wise insider's view of Dobson. Scheaffer and his father, Francis helped found the religious right and he was there at the beginnings of the culture war.

  • I figured we had more agreement than disagreement. You would not have posted initially unless you have the same degree of compassion for the plight of kids that I do. The question is, now what do we do? In the answer to that we found some disagreement, most of it illusory.

  • I think you are very correct that we all have metaphors, so I will try to be clear about my metaphors and my position. I also agree with you that there are many things being talked about, so I will limit my position to just one area with its implications.

  • I think one of the big factors in how we got here was accepting the metaphors we were handed. Those in power handed us a metaphor to use in framing all our attitudes and thinking. That metaphor was a family metaphor.

  • Yes, that is the one. When I recently went there I recognized the area and some of the graves I had seen as a kid (Lou Costello). So, I knew I was in the right place. But, I did not find the statue I remembered. Maybe my memory was playing tricks.

  • All of this points to another prevailing metaphor. For fun, I want to call it the "motor oil is motor oil" metaphor. Somehow we have an emotionally planted frame that says, all brains are alike and if my brain affords me certain things, then everyone's brain does.

  • BnB, Thank you for giving a perfect example to my point. I realize that my first post triggered a lot of your need to defend your metaphors. If I were dealing just with you, I would take an entirely different approach and try hard not to evoke more defensiveness.
